“Jeez ,there are a lot of networking parties coming up. Should I go? Do I need to go?”
Those are good questions. Your attitude towards the event is a forecaster of how you will present yourself, and ultimately, how useful going will be. Here a few tips to help you navigate your social/professional networking holiday calendar:
- Am I interested in going?
- Will there be others I want to meet there?
- Am I sacrificing other priorities to go?
- Will I see some of these people at another event?
- Is the event conducive to conversation?
Sometimes, “I should go” isn’t in your best interest. Real enthusiasm is palpable. If you can’t summon up some enthusiasm, save your energy for the next event!
Once there, take in the scene: identify a small group that are smiling and maybe laughing. That’s your best target! Here are a couple of phrases to help you join:
- “Can I join your conversation?”
- “Hi, I’m (name). Your smiles made me want to come right over and join you!”
- Wear a something that will inspire a question–a holiday pin, tie, earrings.
Have your self intro ready! Avoid describing your job unless asked. It’s a party! Instead offer something (else) about yourself that you love doing.
Ask specific and open ended questions. Yes or no questions are harder to follow up on. Most people love a captive audience. Truly listen and release your agenda of finding new business or getting a promotion. Others will remember the connection they made with you because it felt good. They are less likely to remember your business pitch. Save your pitch for the next time you meet!
Finally, get a contact number/email address and follow up on the conversation in a couple of days. Thank them for the conversation and move on!
Happy Holidays!
