Ever feel like you can’t cut through the chatter in a meeting? Want get your answer to a problem across quickly and effectively? START WITH ONE SENTENCE THAT DESCRIBES YOUR ANSWER, or recommendation. So many of us want to start with all of the objections of why other solutions haven’t worked, or why your solution WILL work. This kind of bottom up communication will often confuse and frustrate your listener. We are coming from a justification mindset when we do this.

Remember, your listener wants your answer, that’s why he/she asked you! Skip all the details until after you give your one sentence answer. First, however, you will want to get to KNOW your listener.

Ask these questions before writing out your solution:

-What does my listener need to hear to feel satisfied?

-What action do I want them to take?

-What do I want them to feel after listening to me?

Then, craft your response to their question in this format:

-Solution

-How or why it will work

-Supporting data
